Mirrung Support Unit
In 2023, Chipping Norton Public School proudly established Mirrung, a three-class support unit named after the Dharug word for "belonging." Mirrung was created to provide specialised support for students with Autism. The unit currently includes two Kindergarten to Year 6 Autism classes and one Kindergarten to Year 6 class for students with Autism and Moderate Intellectual Disability. All students require a smaller class setting and additional support to meet their academic and social needs.
Each class is staffed by one teacher and a School Learning and Support Officer (SLSO) working closely together to deliver tailored learning experiences. Overall, the unit is supported by a team of three teachers and three Learning and Support Officers dedicated to providing personalised support and guidance. Each class has no more than 7 students.
Mirrung is a valued addition to the school community, offering a dynamic and inclusive environment that supports the development of essential life skills. Opportunities for integration into mainstream classes are provided where appropriate, to meet each student’s individual academic and social needs, enabling meaningful interaction with peers of the same age or similar academic level. This integration fosters a sense of belonging and helps students build confidence within the broader school community. Additionally, Mirrung students regularly participate in whole-school activities such as assemblies, sporting programs, and other events, further strengthening their connection with the wider student body.
Each year, Mirrung students take part in an intensive 10-day swimming program designed to build confidence and physical skills. They also engage in targeted sporting programs run by the School Sports Unit. In 2024 and 2025, a team from Mirrung proudly competed in the Boccia Tournament, showcasing their teamwork and sporting abilities alongside other students.
In Mirrung, every student is valued, supported, and empowered to thrive as an integral and active part of the Chipping Norton Public School community.
